Say what you will about Coldplay, but their album “Rush of Blood to the Head” is an all-time great. I’m still a huge fan of songs like “The Scientist”, “Clocks”, “Warning Signs”, and also the title track.

We played our cover of “Politik” at one show ever – in late November of 2016 at Schuba’s (also the only time we ever played Schuba’s – my favorite small venue in Chicago!). That was a really fun show. We had just gotten back to Chicago after playing a music conference in Toronto, Canada.

We were all tired but at the same time really excited to play Schuba’s in front of a packed crowd. I distinctly remember when Greg and Devin played the first few measures of our Politik cover that night, some guy standing in the front row fairly close to me started freestyle rapping to one of his friends. Makes sense since we’re doing a very Dr. Dre-influenced Coldplay cover here.

I don’t think the other guys in the band even heard this guy rapping in the crowd either, it was just a loud and rowdy night in general.

Anyway, thanks for checking this out, and we hope you enjoy! (And for the record, I still find the song “Yellow” to be pretty annoying.)

I’ve always respected The Kinks but wasn’t even really aware of “Strangers” until the great Chicago songwriter Archie Powell (from Archie Powell & the Exports) covered it years ago.

I heard the cover and then looked up the original version by The Kinks online and immediately listened to it about 20 times in a row. It quickly became one of my favorite songs.

My wife and I had our first dance at our wedding to a Norah Jones cover of “Strangers.”

Once, while my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I were on a road trip, I was just explaining to her my interpretation of the song’s lyrics, and she started crying. It’s such a sweet, beautiful, and powerful song. Also, little trivia – Ray Davies was the primary songwriter for the Kinks, but “Strangers” was actually written by his younger brother Dave Davies.

I have a lot of history with this song. For one, I was a huge STP fan in the 90s. “Core” is tied with Pearl Jam’s “Ten” as my two favorite grunge albums.

Also, this song was featured in the all-time-great soundtrack for the movie “The Crow” – which has a lot of history around it. It was a great movie, and also a huge break for Brandon Lee – son of the one and only Bruce Lee (of whom I’m also a huge fan). But, tragically, Brandon died from a freak accident during filming where somehow one of the guns being used in a big shootout scene was loaded with real bullets instead of blanks.

Apparently, Stone Temple Pilots’ contribution to the soundtrack was going to be an unreleased track of theirs that was sort of mocking death, and they switched it out after Brandon’s death for “Big Empty” instead, which was going to be the lead single off their new album. And then Scott Weiland, the lead singer of STP, went on to have a pretty tragic story of his own…

Anyway, not to bum everyone out too much with all of this… “Big Empty” randomly popped in my head a few months ago and I thought it would be a fun one to learn to play. It might not be as meaningful to anyone else but it’s sort of this little time capsule for me.

I thought it would be fun to record a few acoustic covers I’ve been performing over the years. What better way to start it off than with one of my all-time favorite songwriters – Elliott Smith! I have a long history with this song… I play it when “opening” for Molehill at our longer shows, I used to sing it in voice lessons years ago.

I even love just playing and singing it when nobody else is around. A lot of my favorite songs of his have these extremely intricate guitar parts, but Between The Bars is just simple and beautiful. He was such an amazing songwriter.

I hope I did the song justice!

Snow Baby is about two people in love who are stuck inside during a blizzard. Unable to venture into the white-out, they put on a record, start a fire, put away their screens, and enjoy each other’s company. It’s about not only surviving but thriving.

Take a situation that could be negative and use it as a chance to breathe, be present, and make the most of life. This not only applies to a snowstorm but to a pandemic as well. Things have been really difficult lately, but for those of us fortunate enough to still be alive, we need to be grateful. We could all stand to take a couple steps back, breathe, and reconnect with the people we love.
